Characterised by an Edwardian country manor house – Whirlow Brook Hall – and picturesque forest trails, the leafy neighbourhood of Whirlow features an abundance of nature on its doorstep. Adjacent to Whirlow is Parkhead, a smaller residential area and a desirable place to live that shares the same advantages as Whirlow.
Locally sourced produce can be found at the Whirlow Hall Farm Shop. There is plenty to browse, including a butchery – selling rare and native breed meats that are raised on the farm – and a range of Sheffield-based products such as artisan coffee, cheese and beer. Whilst you’re there, grab a bite to eat or a coffee at The Barn Cafe, which serves delicious meals and cakes made from local ingredients. Children will also love a visit to Whirlow Hall Farm Trust to participate in their educational activities and work experience programs.
For everyday necessities, Parkhead has a convenience store that also offers Post Office services. There is a public house in the locality, The Rising Sun, providing warming meals that are perfect for the winter seasons and a pleasant beer garden for the summer. Additionally, there is a popular steakhouse restaurant for an indulgent dinner.
An early 20th century garden, built on an old quarry, Whinfell Quarry Gardens encompasses enchanting grounds that are listed by English Heritage and stretch one hectare. Containing many rare trees and species, explore the winding paths, ascending to the Big and Little Quarries, where the highest point at the north-east corner provides a wonderful viewing platform of the varied landscape below. Limb Brook Trail rises from nearby Ecclesall Woods, through dense woodland alongside the stream, past Whirlow and ends at Ringinglow. Close to the Trail is Whirlow Brook Park. Spanning 39 acres, the park is beautifully scenic and sitting within it is an impressive example of period architecture, Whirlow Brook Hall, which is renowned in the area for elegant private events. In Parkhead, there is a cricket club with junior, senior men’s and senior women’s teams.
Whirlow and Parkhead are joined by a main road, Ecclesall Road South, that leads to Banner Cross and out into the Peak District where it meets Hathersage Road. Public transport routes in both areas take you out to the Peaks or into Sheffield’s city centre. Dore & Totley train station is conveniently reachable, and there are good road links to Ecclesall, Sheffield city centre and popular attractions in the Peak District, such as Hathersage, Grindleford and Hope Valley.
