A leafy suburb, home to useful everyday amenities, superb eateries and outstanding schools. Nestled on the edge of open countryside and a short distance to the Peak District, Fulwood is a popular pick for many.
Traceable back to an Anglo-Saxon settlement, Fulwood became part of the city of Sheffield in the 1930s. Many listed buildings of importance remain, notably Fulwood Hall, which is believed to date back to the 15th century and was one of the first significant homes to be built in the area. Historic homes are combined with newer properties to create a beautiful suburb that retains glimmers of its heritage.
A row of amenities sits along Fulwood Road, including a convenience store, café and an award-winning 19th century pub, the Rising Sun Inn. A well-loved pub with a homely interior and beer garden, the Rising Sun has a food menu full of British classics and plenty of cask beers and guest ales to try from the bar. On the border of Fulwood is Oakbrook Road, known for its warming coffee shops and excellent dining options. Whether it’s a refined culinary experience at Rafters, a chat over cake with friends at Lovely Pear, or picking out some new blooms from Petalis florist, Oakbrook Road is a great destination for locals.
To the south of Fulwood is a large expanse of woodland, perfect for outdoor adventures year-round. Join the Porter Brook Trail from Forge Dam and follow it along to Endcliffe Park, or split off into the rolling countryside of Mayfield Valley. Along the trail is one of Sheffield’s museums, Shepherd Wheel. Learn all about Sheffield’s famous involvement in the steel industry and how the 16th-century water wheel grinding workshop, still in working order, played its part. Equipped with facilities for five different sports and a clubhouse, Fulwood Sports Club includes lawn tennis, squash and racketball, bowling and snooker clubs.
Fulwood is connected by regular bus services to Sheffield city centre and is a popular place to reside for health professionals, due to its proximity to Sheffield’s NHS and private hospitals. In addition to Sheffield’s universities being nearby, there are several schools in the area, from infant to secondary.
